The Company’s key business lines include procurement and supply chain expertise, special nuclear material & high hazard operations, decontamination and demolition and project delivery and integration services. Established in 1999, SMSI is headquartered in Albuquerque, NM and currently operates at four company offices and numerous DOE and NNSA sites.
As a technical and management services provider, SMSI knows that business success relies upon people – our clients, employees, and the communities where we live and work.
HISTORY
SMSI began operations in 2000 with our founder Lee Bernstein, who initially supported construction and environmental projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory and telecommunications projects throughout the Southeastern US in project management and project controls. After the Cerro Grande Fire devastated Los Alamos, Mr. Bernstein was requested to help stand–up a recovery program. Since that time, SMSI has filled a vital need to deliver value quickly, on time and under budget. SMSI has grown and thrived because we consistently deliver and help our clients solve problems to accomplish their mission.
On April 15, 2024, SMSI announced that we have been acquired by Bernhard Capital Partners (Bernhard Capital), a services and infrastructure-focused private equity management firm. SMSI is the third acquisition of Bernhard Capital’s dedicated Department of Energy (DOE) services platform which aims to provide vertically integrated capabilities and support for customers across the country executing critical projects in complex environments – ranging from strategic planning and program management to the implementation of critical engineering and production activities. With this acquisition, Lee Bernstein transitioned to Consultant and David O’Flynn assumed the role of Executive Director for the dedicated DOE platform. SMSI will continue to be led by SMSI President Matthew Nuckols and the current leadership team. We are excited for this next chapter in our history. Read the press release.
SMSI is headquartered in Albuquerque, NM, with offices and operations in Los Alamos, NM, Oak Ridge, TN, Richland, WA, and numerous client sites throughout the US.
