Program Management and Project Controls Support

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING

Our program managers, engineering managers, and engineers have planned and executed projects ranging from small facility modifications to multi-billion-dollar grassroots efforts. We are particularly adept at meeting the ever-increasing demands of the Department of Energy (DOE) Order 413.3A and associated implementation guides for projects of all types. We have a demonstrated ability to translate DOE requirements into practical and useful planning and guidance documents that enable project teams to succeed.

ESTIMATING

SMSI maintains teams of professional estimators in New Mexico (Los Alamos and Albuquerque), California (Oakland), and the Washington, DC, area. We know the local markets, contractors, and labor resources. Our estimators average more than 25 years of experience, spanning the range of engineering disciplines, for DOE, commercial, industrial, and high technology facilities.

SCHEDULING

We measure scheduling success not by the complexity of our Gantt charts but rather in days and dollars. Our accurate and up-to-date project schedules support decision-making and communication of project status. Using critical path method and other scheduling methodologies, SMSI applies robust, state-of-the-art scheduling tools to support our DOE and commercial clients.

COST ENGINEERING

Through cost engineering, we optimize the relationship between project cost and project execution. SMSI solves problems related to cost estimating, cost control, business planning, profitability analysis, and scheduling. We manage the process from validation of total project cost in the design stage through completion.

EARNED VALUE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

EVMS is the standard on many federal government projects. We manage the process from implementation, performing gap analysis through documentation and certification audits to DOE and ANSI standards. We are experts in EVMS and know how to improve project planning, execution, and performance monitoring.

DOCUMENT CONTROL AND RECORDS MANAGEMENT

Document control and records management intersect with a host of business, organizational, operational, and technical issues as well as information technology (IT). Our toolkit in project management, software engineering, solution architecture, and enterprise IT systems prepares us to transform unorganized collections of legacy records (paper or electronic) into searchable electronic document and records management systems (EDRMS).

RISK MANAGEMENT

Our risk management plans help clients identify, quantify, respond to, monitor, and control the events that create risk. By minimizing risks and capitalizing on opportunities, we optimize project cost, schedule, and quality outcomes. We help clients understand the sources of risks, their implications, their probability of occurrence, and their potential impact on each project phase.

CERTIFIED PROJECT CONTROLS TRAINING

SMSI has a partnership with Oracle as authorized trainers of Primavera and authorized trainers of COBRA. SMSI can train, implement, and maintain customized Primavera and COBRA software and baselines. Our training staff is highly skilled and current because they use the products every day. Additionally, we have the ability to provide our customers with the software needed for your company.
