Systems Engineering and Requirements Development

Accurate and traceable definition of system requirements is a prerequisite for the successful execution of complex systems and facilities projects. SMSI defines, develops, and documents programmatic, functional, performance, and operational requirements, while integrating safety, regulatory, and program drivers. We know how to define requirements in a way that satisfies user objectives the first time. We follow up with analytical and documentation support to align execution with requirements through effective configuration management. SMSI staff:

  • Develop systems engineering policies and procedures
  • Develop requirements databases
  • Prepare functional and operational requirements and program requirements documents
  • Develop system design descriptions, facility design descriptions, and systems engineering management plans (SEMP)
  • Provide configuration management plans, policies, and procedures
  • Prepare interface control diagrams and documents
By providing systems engineering processes, documents, and requirements that are easy to understand and use, we ensure that requirements are translated into designs and operations that achieve technical objectives safely and effectively.

For example, on LANL's Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement (CMRR) project, we rewrote the SEMP to improve the traceability and usefulness of a massive set of requirements, in strict integration with the nuclear safety documentation and the design. During conceptual design of LANL's Transuranic Waste Facility, we developed a complete set of requirements depicting the process for waste storage, characterization/assay, packaging, and shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. We translated functional requirements into specific design solutions and alternatives, with associated costs and schedules.
