Health Physics and Industrial Hygiene

To help clients ensure worker safety and health, SMSI offers self-assessments, development of graded approaches, occupational exposure assessments and controls, and hazard analyses. We:

  • Design and implement qualitative and quantitative occupational exposure assessments of chemical, physical, and biological hazards that our clients use to baseline, prioritize, and monitor operations and projects
  • Assess personal exposures in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and similar methodologies
  • Recommend controls to manage worker exposures: engineered controls, administrative controls, or personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Develop parameters for upgrading or downgrading PPE
  • Develop respiratory protection strategies for work inside government nuclear facilities
  • Assess conventional workplace hazards: for example, asbestos, lead, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, noise, and heat stress
  • Create job and process hazard analyses
  • Develop approaches to manage confined space entry, hazardous waste operations, emergency response, lock-out/tag-out, hearing conservation, blood-borne pathogens, carcinogen control, and other specialized project needs
  • Provide support on indoor air quality, ergonomics, and emerging office environment issues
  • Provide health physics, radiological controls, and hazardous materials management support - from planning and program design through implementation and execution
