SMSI ROLE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

SMSI provides a wide set of engineering, technical, operations, and administrative support to DOE at two sister facilities for DUF6 conversion (Paducah, KY and Portsmouth, OH), for which SMSI assists DOE with oversight of the M&O contractor. SMSI also assists DOE with oversight of multiple prime contractors engaged in environment restoration and facility disposition projects at the former gaseous diffusion plants. SMSI provides support through a dedicated team of over 45 staff at three sites: Lexington, KY; Portsmouth, OH; and Paducah, KY. SMSI personnel interface with DUF6 M&O and other prime contractors on a daily basis. We help DOE PPPO successfully integrate a diverse program portfolio by coordinating and aligning multiple contractors, regulators, communities, and stakeholders. We provide key advice for safe and efficient management of nuclear facility operations and cylinder inventories so that DOE can take advantage of the uranium commodities market to help offset the cost of the program to the US taxpayer. We provide key advice to guide the prime operating contractors to safe and compliant facility and process restarts. We have also provided effective guidance and consulting on land transfer and reuse.
