Demolition and Decommissioning

Demolition and Decommissioning

SMSI is experienced in planning and management of facility decontamination, demolition, decommissioning, and final disposition, especially within the US Department of Energy. We are experienced in facilities with radiological (transuranic, low level, and others), mixed, and hazardous waste streams. Facility and system types include research and development, process, liquid waste processing, solid waste processing, office and institutional buildings, and infrastructure.

As part of the planning process, we assess facility operations, research prior activities, perform surveys, and collect all available data. This informs an accurate planning process.

Through walkdowns and interviews with facility operators, we then evaluate different options and alternatives to disposition the facility and ascertain the desired goals of the client - whether it be to place the facility in safe standby or to completely decontaminate, decommission, and demolish.

We develop comprehensive plans, estimates, schedules, health and safety plans, waste management and pollution prevention plans, project execution plans, and other required items. We support regulatory and permitting requirements. We are experienced in waste management alternative analysis and help manage waste management activities (from characterization and packaging through shipping).

Experience includes DD&D and related Environmental Restoration planning, oversight, and execution support for nuclear and institutional facilities at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Stanford Linear Accelerator, Energy Technology Engineering Center, and for the projects within the DOE Portsmouth Paducah Project Office portfolio.
